Is a GCC cheaper than outsourcing to a third-party BPO in India?
A third-party BPO arrangement has near-zero setup cost and can be operational in weeks, since the vendor absorbs entity setup, compliance, HR, and infrastructure - but that convenience is priced into the vendor's margin, typically 20-40% above the vendor's own delivery cost, and you have limited control over talent selection, retention, or process ownership. It's usually the right choice for short-term, non-core, or highly standardized work.
A wholly-owned GCC requires entity incorporation, direct hiring, infrastructure setup, and building your own management layer, and six to nine months of setup lead time is typical, but once operational, its fully-loaded cost per employee is lower because there's no vendor margin, and you retain direct control over quality, IP, and process design. For functions that are core to your competitive advantage, handle sensitive data or IP, or are expected to run for several years at meaningful scale, a GCC's higher setup cost is usually recovered within 18-24 months through the margin saved. Many companies also use a phased BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) model to get BPO-like speed initially while converting to a fully owned GCC later.
